As I did last month I am talking to Craig Joseph, MD (@CraigJoseph) Chief Medical Officer at Avaap. Given the focus and concern around the potential Pandemic for COVID-19  dominating the news cycles, we discuss the context of this virus and how it stacks up against other related viral infections. How does it infect you and what you can do to help limit your exposure?

Like its cousins, SARS and MERS this zoonotic virus appears to have hopped the animal/human boundary leaving humans exposed to infection our bodies do not have much of any experience dealing with.  Two of the most telling graphs came from this article on National Geographic: How coronavirus compares to flu, Ebola, and other major outbreaks.

Comparing mortality

Coronavirus Compared to Other Outbreaks

Then comparing infection rates this is the SARS tracking of the number of infected cases

and then comparing the two to date with the number of cases over time:

Listen in to hear us discuss the history, spread and what you can do if you are attending HIMSS (here is how it spreads on a plane and where best to sit on planes to reduce your likelihood of getting infected) to reduce your chance of getting infected and then round out the discussion on the potential technology trends and what you should look out for at HIMSS and what you might see

My thanks to HP for sponsoring this episode
