Talking with Marck-Arthur Clerveau, the Innovation Manager for Inventor Services at the MedStar Institute for Innovation (@Mi2innovation) at Medstar Health.
Marck works with inventors at MedStar to help set assess, fund, structure and ultimately to find a path for commercialize technology to improve healthcare. We discuss his journey to innovation that started in engineering but took a turn following a fortuitous participation in a course at UMass Lowell the MSIT study of innovation and entrepreneurship.
We talk about the important aspect of starting with the clinical need – a recurring theme in my interviews on innovation and incremental steps; start with a problem that is keeping people awake at night or causing them problems. Ideas are plentiful, but ones that actually solve problems is a much harder challenge
He shares the details of a concussion assessment tool Brain FORCE mTBI Screening Tool that put together a group to help develop an easy to use quick assessment tool for concussions and the key contribution of human factors and usability input. We discuss the Minnovations program that features as one of the key incremental steps taken to nurturing and accelerating innovation and the inspiration he found in the “DifferenceMaker” program from UMass Lowell and the freshman orientation ideation session and why it was impactful
