This week I explore the success of one country that ranks second in the world for their response to COVID19.
Can you guess who it is?
- They spend 2.4% of their GDP on health or approximately $72 per person
They have 6 doctors per 100,000 people
They have around 14,000 cases of COVID19 infection
284 deaths in a population of approximately 15 million people. (That’s a 0.001% rate of mortality)
If you guessed an African nation on the west coast of Africa – you were right. This is Senegal
Leadership and Storytelling
What was their secret – well they certainly learned from previous infectious disease outbreaks in particular living in close proximity to Ebola outbreaks they were certainly familiar with what it takes to stop Pandemics?
But their response included rapidly setting up mobile testing labs that can report a result in 15 minutes, ensuring that everyone who was infected or deemed a contact would have a place to stay for the duration of their isolation or quarantine but perhaps most important of ll an honest daily update that was shared with the whole country that dealt in facts and science, not politics
They are also, like many other African countries, big on storytelling and maybe this helped their leader, Macky Sall (@Macky_Sall), the President of Senegal (just one look at his twitter background tells you they take this seriously)
The challenge of the ever-changing landscape we live in is planning. This is especially true in the COVID19 era as we continue to chase information that is moving in real-time and make judgments and decisions based on the best available data, today
From a business, college, and school planning standpoint how do you approach this and be successful? This requires some agility in your approach and the ability to set small, incremental short-term targets that allow you to narrow your focus and be successful. Alongside this narrow focus is the need to prepare for a wide range of possible outcomes or changes which are best addressed by broadening your outlook and scenario planning that attempts to think through potential challenges as you open your business, school to college
Surviving and Thriving Incrementally in the new Post COVID19 world demands rethinking our business and especially in the light of testing strategies for COVID19 and the challenge of knowing what you need to do to keep your business, employees, and customers safe.
