Patients Biggest Stakeholder in their Care
I was lucky to catch up with Anil Sethi, entrepreneur and previous founder of multiple successful healthcare companies who came to Health Datapalooza where he moderated the panel: Taking Charge of Your Own Health – Insights, and stories from patients/caregivers who have successfully disrupted or redesigned health care.
Anil shared his personal story of his little sister who was diagnosed with late-stage metastatic breast cancer and recently passed away. She used her own personal healthcare record on Gliimpse (subsequently acquired by Apple) to help navigating the 17 facilities and collected all the records into one medical record of her own (A glimpse into her past).
He tells the story of the day when Epic EMR crashed in UCSF for 36 hours and the majority of oncology patients were canceled – except for her as she had her whole record available to discuss with her oncologist.
This is not the only reason for patients to have, hold and use their clinical data but one of several really good reasons why patients need open access to their data
