This week we are focusing on staying healthy and safe in the sun. Many of us are “sun worshippers” and we seek the sun to get a tan or just enjoy being out in the sunshine (it is a great way of elevating the mood as we know from the incidence of Seasonal affective disorder (SAD) that occurs in the winter months that responds well to light therapy).
There are some simple incremental steps you can take to keep yourself healthy and safe in the sun and we break it down in this week’s video
- Wear Eye Protection
- Use sunscreen
- Drink fluids and stay hydrated
For those of you concerned about the recent scare on sunscreen chemical absorption by your skin the guidance remains to use sunscreen but there is more research to be done. In the meantime, if you are worried about this your option is to use sun-protective clothing instead – whatever you do don’t skip on protection. You can read more here.
It’s also a good idea to track your exposure and there are several apps that can help with both the intensity (UV Index) and duration of exposure that are featured in this Top 5 list Sun safety apps.
