Do You Need to Take Supplements

A recent editorial in the Annals of Medicine by my friend Dr. Eric Topol and his colleague Dr. Pandey caught my eye. Dispense With Supplements for Improving Heart Outcomes.
In the United states, nearly 75% of people are taking some supplement or another with the supplement market set to reach some 300 billion in the next few years so there’s a lot of money at stake, and most of it is yours.

You only have to take a look down the supplement aisle of any pharmacy store to get a sense of the wide range of options and choices available to you of pills you can take for – fill in the gap for health benefit, a cure for a disease, aging, you name it. In many cases the prices and packaging are put in such a compelling way that your thinking might go – well its only a few cents per day, there’s no risk-taking something my body needs and is in our diet already, I’m probably better of taking it just in case it is good for me and my health, and if it is not any real harm and it doesn’t make a big dent in your personal finances. Well, current data suggests it averages out to about $100 per man woman and child per year!
So what should you do based on science. It’s easy to get sucked into the marketing as the statistics demonstrate but just because a bottle or advert suggests you need something does not mean you do. Listen in to find out what the science says and what it means for you
