The Price We Pay
Talking with Marty Makary, MD, Professor of Surgery and Health Policy & Management, Johns Hopkins University School of Medicine and author of “The Price we Pay – What Broke American Healthcare and How to Fix It” at the World Healthcare Congress (WHCC19).
As he puts it the two main issues in our healthcare system for the 60% of healthcare that is “shoppable” (and where the system should be providing a price to the patient) is:
- Appropriateness of care, and
- Pricing failure
As he rightly points out
Patient are now paying a large stake in the bill and they are getting hammered (with bills that are overpriced, typically show up as a surprise and they can’t afford)
He talks about the positive impact he has had in the instances where he appears for patients who are being chased by the medical establishment.
Listen in to hear his thoughts on the politics of healthcare and the impact it will have on the upcoming elections and what we as patients, clinicians and participants in our healthcare system and community should be doing.
