This week I discuss the “hold” on the Astrazeneca Oxford SARS-CoV-2 vaccine, AZD1222, Phase 3 vaccine trial. History is replete with learning opportunities and thankfully science is always trying to use these insights for their benefit of the advancement of our understanding. Case in point we have learned much about vaccine safety and how-to bring vaccines to the general population as safely as possible.
To be clear – vaccines work and are safe, but like everything in life it is impossible to remove all risk. There is always some risk associated with taking medication, eating food, walking outside, driving… you get the picture. If you are interested to read more about vaccines you can find many posts on the topic on my website. I would also recommend this post on the extensive disinformation campaign that exists and some of the reasons why and how you can protect yourself and everyone else.
Why Pause a Trial
Pausing a vaccine trial is not unusual and is done when a possible side effect is detected that may have been caused by the vaccine being tested. What does that mean for the safety of the vaccine, for the individual who has suffered this adverse reaction, and for the future of this potential COVID19 vaccine candidate? We don’t know and need to wait for the researchers, clinicians, and everyone involved in the trial to review the data and report back.
In the meantime, its back to the COVID19 grindstone so:
- Wear a Face Covering
- Keep Physical Distance
- Practice good hygiene including handwashing, AND
- Get a Flu Shot for the 2020/2021 season
The challenge of the ever-changing landscape we live in is planning. This is especially true in the COVID19 era as we continue to chase information that is moving in real-time and make judgments and decisions based on the best available data, today
From a business, college, and school planning standpoint how do you approach this and be successful? This requires some agility in your approach and the ability to set small, incremental short-term targets that allow you to narrow your focus and be successful. Alongside this narrow focus is the need to prepare for a wide range of possible outcomes or changes which are best addressed by broadening your outlook and scenario planning that attempts to think through potential challenges as you open your business, school to college
Surviving and Thriving Incrementally in the new Post COVID19 world demands rethinking our business and especially in the light of testing strategies for COVID19 and the challenge of knowing what you need to do to keep your business, employees, and customers safe.
